When I chose pavement engineering as my major for the bachelor’s degree, I didn’t expect that I would spend the following ten years on the research of asphalt pavement.
Asphalt pavement never ceases to amaze me. Aggregate source and structure contribute greatly to the performance of asphalt pavement. As a temperature-dependent and time-dependent material, asphalt binder plays a key role in the rutting and fatigue performance of asphalt pavement. In addition, construction quality has been proven to have a significant influence on asphalt pavement service life. Due to the limited natural resources and increasing environmental-friendly awareness, new technologies including recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and warm mixed asphalt have been applied to asphalt pavement gradually. After the efforts of generations of researchers and engineers, there is still a gap left to improve the asphalt pavement in the aspects of asphalt material design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation.
In order to have a deep understanding of asphalt pavement, I have conducted asphalt binder experiments, compacted asphalt mixtures, carried out tests on asphalt mixtures and cored samples from the field. I prepared asphalt binder samples at different aging level with rolling thin-film oven and pressure aging vessel and tested them in the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) to evaluate properties at high and low temperatures.
I am also involved in a project of characterizing RAP at the scale of fine aggregate matrix. Fine aggregate matrix is consisted of asphalt binder and fine aggregates (sieve size<2.38 mm). I have been exploring the fatigue performance of fine aggregate matrix with RAP using DSR. Besides, I mixed the fine aggregate matrix with rejuvenators and conducted the fatigue tests in DSR to study the effect of different rejuvenators and different dosages on the fatigue performance of RAP.
With the increasing interest on asphalt pavement, I am determined to continue my work on asphalt material. Thus, I took and passed the FE civil engineering exam. I hope to make a contribution to the development of asphalt pavement after years’ PhD research and future work.

o In 2013, I got accepted to work in Professor Yang Jun’s pavement lab in Southeast University, Nanjing. I was involved in a project of predicting asphalt pavement rutting performance based on the internal aggregate structure. I was responsible for the experiment design, conducting most of tests and data analysis.

I like traveling. It has been my dream to travel around the world since I was a kid. So far, I have been to many cities in China, Japan, Netherland, Germany, France and so on. I enjoy trips with friends and families, but I also like exploring new places by myself. During these travels, I especially pay attention to asphalt pavements, and I often found that most of my pictures were about pavements in that country.
Watching documentary movies is another hobby of mine. I am curious about the cause for natural phenomena, mechanism of design in our daily life and exploration of Space. I am always shocked by how much effort and progress human being have made to understand ourselves and the surroundings.
Playing table tennis and jogging are my major activities for weekends. They can not only keep me fit but also help me balance my life. I have a great time playing table tennis with my friends. Jogging provides a chance for me to get close to nature and breath fresh air.
