I have research and practical experiences on asphalt technology during my Ph.D. study.
I started learning about asphalt in 2011 when I started conducting my dissertation research “Polymeric thermochromic dye for improvement of asphalt pavement durability”, which was supported by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and National Science Foundation (NSF). To accomplish this project, I did literature review about asphalt, learned engineering problems and research trend in the field of asphalt. At the same time, I took the course “Pavement Analysis and Design”, held in Department of Civil Engineering at CWRU. By taking this course, I gained fundamental knowledge about asphalt binder, aggregates, asphalt mixture, and asphalt pavement. The instructor organized field trip and I visited Kokosing construction plant. I learned the manufacturing process of asphalt mixture in the plant and their quality control lab. I was also excited to communicate with professionals in industry about asphalt, especially the new products. To further reinforce my knowledge, I received comprehensive training at National Center for Asphalt Technology in 2015. In this training program, I not only learned fundamental knowledge, but also learned their interesting projects. I also built relationship with expert from both academia and industry.
Besides academic training, I learned practical experience on asphalt in industry. I had internship at Kokosing Materials Inc. for one month in 2014 and 2015. During my internship, I worked with professionals in the company to design and evaluate modified asphalt products, such as SBS modified asphalt. I learned Superpave mix design and quality control of HMA following the ODOT specifications.
With much academic and practical experience, I shared my knowledge with students. I delivered guest lectures on the course of “Pavement Evaluation and Design”, including topics of Superpave binder testing, HMA design, and special asphalt mixture. I prepared lab demonstration on asphalt, including mixing of modified asphalt, softening point, penetration, and rotational viscometer test. Furthermore, I am in charge of the industry-university joint asphalt lab, which was supported by the company of Full Circle Technologies. I designed and evaluated various asphalt products, especially DVR modified asphalt. More importantly, I am responsible for providing training on asphalt technology. I have trained a few undergraduates, graduates, and our engineering staff about asphalt binder testing.
As I know, various modifiers have been proposed to improve properties of asphalt, however, most of them only address one of these common issues, such as aging, rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking. I am exploring strategies to design adaptive asphalt which could be durable under different conditions. Therefore, I applied for Ph.D. study in Macromolecular science in 2017 to learn fundamental of both asphalt and polymers. I will learn synthesis and manufacturing process of functional polymers which can enhance performance of asphalt, especially its resistance to aging, cracking and moisture. I will also investigate how the polymers interact with asphalt to improve the compatibility. In future, I would like to propose a successful methodology to develop sustainable asphalt technology.
