Please write a short essay on activities and/or interest in asphalt technology | For most of my time as a civil engineering student, my goal was to become a municipal engineer that would improve the lives of citizens through the power of infrastructure. Having already worked for two cities, my dream was to become a City Engineer and make a positive impact on a community. When I thought about what that meant, I would usually think of roads. One option was working in a large city like where I could be part of maintaining complex road systems that exist above a living history of infrastructure. Another involved working in a small city where I could make the most impact possible. I no longer have plans to pursue these kinds of positions, but I have felt a calling for working in pavement since I started working to become a civil engineer. |

Provide details of any work experience relative to the highway industry | The job that has provided me with the most work experience relevant to the highway industry has been my position as a student worker with MnDOT’s OMRR. As I explained in my previous essay, this job has provided me with opportunities to work on highway construction jobs in close collaboration with contractors. I have also been able to work on projects that focus on the study of materials used in the base layer of highways. Through the RD project, I have been involved in multiple highway site investigations. We collected data on both I-94 in the twin cities and I-90 near Adrien, MN to try to identify concrete panel delamination. |
List your academic awards and honors | In the Fall of 2018, I was awarded the Gene Skok Scholarship for undergraduates with an interest in pavement engineering. That same semester I was awarded the Jack and Sue Cornwell Memorial Scholarship for students with high academic achievement. I am a member of the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society for students that “have exemplified the principles of scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability…in the civil engineering profession”. |
Discuss your hobbies and interests | The two hobbies that I am most passionate about are keeping up with new music and new movies. My closest friends and I have really built our relationship around following these two medias and keeping track of what is playing well with critics, at the box office, and on the charts. It is a kind of spectator sport, where the scores are pretty much subjective, and the number of teams is infinite. |
List your school activities | Other than being involved in my research and coursework, I participate in many school activities. I am an active member of the University of Minnesota’s chapter of the Chi Epsilon Honor Society. As a group, we plan and put on events such as Red Cross blood drives, finals week open pancake breakfasts, and trash cleanup days along the Mississippi river. I am also a member of my school’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. |
