Please write a short essay on activities and/or interest in asphalt technology | My interest in asphalt technology began when I first declared a dual major, adding a major in civil engineering to my already-declared environmental major, and began talking with the faculty about what civil engineering entails - it's greatest challenges and emerging fields. After speaking with a particular Professor, who I would later take for civil engineering materials, he noted asphalt was his passion and why - the emerging technologies within it are always changing, being refined, or being devised, and with it the industry. After taking civil engineering materials, the ending section was dedicated entirely HMA design according to Superpave standards, which similar to my interest in chess, I found very challenging but worked through to completely understand the methodology, rationale, and history of HMA and Superpave mix design. One of the activities conducted was designed a test batch of Superpave HMA entirely from scratch that fell within engineering standards as a viable mix, which were then tested using Static Creep, Dynamic Modulus, and Shear tests for viability. |

Provide details of any work experience relative to the highway industry | I worked for 6 months as an intern for a firm that dealt exclusively with transportation design, Protean Design Group. There, a majority of my work was dedicated to helping design roadways that were to be rebuilt or repaved, this included asphalt selection as well general roadway design. |
